Unexploded ordnance

During World War II, there was fighting in Heerlen. Some of the ammunition did not explode at the time and is still in the ground. We call this unexploded ordnance (UXO). A few pieces have been found in recent years. As long as you do not dig, there is no danger. The municipality has conducted research and established clear rules for anyone who wants to dig.

Where is the risk greater?

In some places, there is a greater chance that there are still explosives in the ground. These places are marked on the risk maps of the Gegevenshuis. You can find these Maps the Gegevenshuis website .

Do you need to do additional research first?

There is a checklist that helps you determine whether additional research is needed before you start digging. This checklist is based on the risk analysis. You can download it from the overheid.nl website .

Do you find anything suspicious in the soil?

Even in areas without increased risk, there may still be explosives present. If you find something that looks like this while digging, follow the protocol for spontaneous discovery of explosives:

  • Stop working at that location immediately.
  • Keep people away
  • Call the police and report what you have found.
  • Is there immediate danger? Call 911.
