Birth registration

Have you had a baby? Congratulations! You must register the birth no later than the third working day after the day of birth. You must register the birth with the municipality in which the child was born.

Approach

For digital birth declaration: complete the form (together with your partner, when applicable). Confirm the digital birth declaration yourself (single) or by your partner. You will receive one confirmation email with a link. Click on this link and log in with your Digid (single person) or his/her DigiD (partner). Please allow for a delay between logging out and logging in again. Wait 15 minutes before you or your partner log in to DigiD, via the confirmation email! You register the birth with the municipality in which the child was born. You may inscribe your child in the marriage book yourself.

If your child is stillborn, you cannot register the birth digitally. You must register the birth at the civil registry office of the municipality where your child was born. The municipality will issue you with a birth certificate (stillborn). First, make an appointment with the civil registry office. For more information, see: registering a stillborn child. We wish you strength in coping with this loss.

Description

You must register the birth no later than three days after the birth. The day of the birth does not count. If the third day is a Saturday, Sunday, or public holiday, you may also register the birth on the first working day after that.

The registrar will issue a birth certificate. This states where your child was born and what their name is. You can request a copy of the birth certificate for a fee.

You can give your first child the father's surname, the mother's surname, or a double surname. If you have more children within the relationship, they will have the same surname as the first child.

  • the head of the institution (e.g., hospital) where the child was born
