Already 5,000 Heerlen residents aged 65 and over are free members of the library
In Heerlen, all residents aged 65 and older can become members of the library free of charge. Thanks to an arrangement between the municipality of Heerlen and SCHUNCK Library, we will be offering this free membership starting in 2023.

To date, more than 5,000 seniors are using this subscription. This wonderful result shows how important the library is to older people. Alderman Marco Peters senior citizen policy) encourages people over 65 to use the subscription and (re)discover the library.
Alderman Marco Peters:
“The library is no longer just a place to borrow books. You will find thousands of e-books, audiobooks, and magazines, as well as a wide range of courses, from language to digital skills, that will help you continue to develop. This free subscription offers seniors the opportunity to remain active and involved. Participating in society is essential for a pleasant retirement.”
Help with questions for the government
Every library has a Digital Government Information Point. Here you can get help if you have questions for the government. The staff at SCHUNCK are happy to assist you.
The library is a place to meet each other.
Kor Bonnema is the director of SCHUNCK. He says, "More and more people aged 65 and older are coming to the library. They don't just come for books. They also come to meet other people."
"The library is the living room of the city. With this subscription, we are making the library truly accessible to people over 65. It is a place where everyone can continue to learn. You can participate in courses and enjoyable activities. You can also ask questions at the Digital Government Information Point. In the library, you can stay connected with others."
