The power grid in the Netherlands is at capacity. This is called grid congestion. As a result, new homes and schools are not always able to get a power connection. The municipality of Heerlen is adopting the new national approach: “Apply Early.” This way, we’re helping projects in Heerlen secure power capacity.
Mayor Roel Wever is designating the Heerlerheide-Passart and Vrieheide-De Stack neighborhoods as safety-risk areas effective today. This action is being taken due to ongoing youth-related disturbances and disruptions to public order.
Roel Wever , mayor of Heerlen, is taking additional measures to combat youth-related disturbances in Heerlerheide. Young people are intimidating residents, vandalizing property, and resorting to violence. The mayor is working with the police to put a stop to this.
On August 5, the mayor of Heerlen ordered the closure of three homes in Heerlen for a period of twelve months. A police investigation revealed that the homes were involved in the trafficking of hard drugs. Weapons were also found in some of the homes. Due to the seriousness of the situation and the threat to public order and safety, the mayor decided to close the homes. All of the homes are located throughout Heerlen-Noord.
The taxi stand for nights out is moving from the Bongerd to Geleenstraat. This change takes effect on Thursday, August 6. The new location is reserved exclusively for taxis on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings between 10:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m.

A phishing email with the subject line “Municipal Energy Survey” is circulating. It appears to be sent by our municipality, but it is not from us. The email entices you to participate in the survey by offering gift cards. A concerned resident reported this to the municipality of Heerlen. Other municipalities are also issuing warnings about this.
On Thursday, July 9, 2026, the municipality of Heerlen and the police inspected 16 properties on Hoofdstraat. We focused primarily on properties where rooms are rented out and those for which we had received reports of disturbances.
We want to know what’s happening behind closed doors. We’re also cracking down on abuses. This is how we make the neighborhood safer and more livable.
Minister David van Weel paid a working visit to Heerlen today. He wants to gain an understanding of the issues surrounding subversive crime, street safety, quality of life, and public nuisances.
