Other Times - The Dust Settles [multiple dates]

History program Andere Tijden is coming out with a series about Limburg and the scars of the mining industry fifty years after the closure of the last state mine: Het stof dalen. This four-part series is also presented by Winfried Baijens.

The closure of the mines, made inevitable by the rapidly deteriorating market for coal and - ironically - the discovery of natural gas in Groningen, threw Limburg back miles in its economic development. What remained was the nostalgia for the camaraderie of the 'koempels', a romantic image that persisted for years. But now it is viewed differently, also by the Limburgers themselves. Economically a blessing, it is true, but with a dark edge, because the life of a miner was an attack on health - with the treacherous dust lungs as a silent assassin.

Winfried Baijens delves into the eventful history of the Limburg mining industry, its growth and prosperity, its downsides, the myth of miners' camaraderie, the pain of closure and the way in which Limburg has gradually recovered.

The documentary series 'The dust descends' consists of four parts and will be broadcast on the following dates:
