Betaplein and Schelmenhofje Are Becoming Greener
The design for Betaplein and Schelmenhofje in downtown Heerlen is complete. Both squares will feature more greenery and become pleasant places to sit. Schelmenhofje will have a clear connection to the Schelmentoren and Heerlen’s medieval history. Construction is expected to begin in early 2027.

In August 2025, the municipality presented the preliminary design to residents, business owners, and other stakeholders. They had the opportunity to provide feedback and make suggestions during an open house. Where possible, this feedback was incorporated into the final design.
What's changing at the Schelmenhofje?
The Schelmenhofje will feature landscaping that complements the historic surroundings of the Schelmentoren. The tower’s entrance will be more visible. A steel-and-wood structure will be built that pays homage to the area’s medieval past. This structure will complement the renovated Schelmentoren.
A new stage and seating area made of natural stone will be built at the entrance. It consists of three levels. You can use it in various ways:
- Visitors can sit there
- Children can play there
- There is space for small activities and events
Multi-trunked trees and perennials will be planted. This will add more greenery, color, and shade to the square.
What changes are coming to Betaplein?
Betaplein will be a quiet and sheltered spot right in the heart of downtown. It will feature:
- Comfortable seating areas
- More trees and plants
- More shade
- Clearer walking routes
How do the squares fit together?
Each square in the city center will have its own character and atmosphere. At the same time, a sense of cohesion is created through the use of recognizable materials, paving, and greenery. In this way, the various squares form a recognizable whole. Each square, however, retains its own identity and character.
This also applies to Betaplein and Schelmenhofje: two places, each with its own distinct character, that together form part of a recognizable whole.
With this design, we’re adding two lovely green spaces to the city center. At the Schelmenhofje, we’re highlighting the unique history of this site. The renovated Schelmentoren will be set in surroundings that complement it. At the same time, we’re creating space for socializing, relaxation, and small-scale activities. In this way, history and the city’s modern-day use come together beautifully.
When will the work begin?
The municipality is now refining the final design into a technical design. This will be followed by the bidding process. The municipality is expected to select a contractor by the end of 2026. Construction will then begin in early 2027. If everything goes according to plan, Betaplein and Schelmenhofje will be completed in the summer of 2027.
