Coalition Agreement Presented

On May 29, the incoming city council presented the new coalition agreement to the press. The OPH, PRO/PvdD, SP, JPH, and D66 have formed a coalition. Together, they hold a comfortable majority in the Heerlen City Council. But their ambitions go further, as they state in the agreement. They aim to be a city government for all residents of Heerlen.

This requires an open and service-oriented attitude toward residents, business owners, civic organizations, and partners in our city. It also requires constructive cooperation with the entire city council as the democratically elected representatives of our city.

In the coalition agreement, they outline their mission along four main lines:

  • For a socially inclusive, safe, and healthy Heerlen, where financial security, equal opportunities, and good health do not depend on the neighborhood where you grow up or the circumstances into which you are born.
  • For a thriving, innovative, and connected Heerlen, where culture, education, the economy, housing, and urban development contribute to a sense of pride, community, and a bright future.
  • For a sustainable, green, and clean Heerlen, where the energy transition is socially inclusive, the living environment becomes healthier, and we take responsibility for future generations and the natural world of which we are a part.
  • And for a reliable, service-oriented, and engaged Heerlen, where finances are in order, the administration and organizations deliver on their promises, residents are taken seriously, and cooperation forms the foundation for progress.

The final chapter wraps up the agreement, but the coalition notes that it may well be the most important prerequisite for success. After all, ambitious goals require a government that is reliable, partners who take responsibility, and an organization that delivers.
