Heerlen's youngest director receives a youth award for an indoor playground
Benjamin Pacbier (8), a fourth-grader, dreamed of having his own playground in the center of Heerlen. He had an idea and built a model of it at home using LEGO. He asked his father, creative entrepreneur Lars Pacbier, if he could build his idea. So Benjamin, together with his father, made his dream come true. That’s quite remarkable at such a young age. That’s why the youngest director from Heerlen received the Youth Award today from Mayor Wever and Alderman .

“Benjamin shows that commitment and caring for one another know no age limits. Through his unique initiative and creative ideas, he has opened an indoor playground for all children. There, he gives tours and makes sure everyone feels welcome. The fact that his next dream is to open his own children’s town hall says everything about his tremendous dedication and ambition. This makes him a wonderful role model for our entire community.”
“Inside Out” Community Center
In January 2026, the playground on the Promenade in downtown Heerlen opened its doors to children who prefer board games and reading to video games or tablets. It’s also a place where children come with their parents or grandparents to play together and meet others. Parents must be present, which also creates a space where parents can chat with one another, where there is laughter, and where new friendships are formed.
Helping others
Ever since he was little, Benjamin has felt it’s important to help others and make sure no one is left out. According to his parents, he walks around the playground proudly and strikes up conversations with visitors. He turns out to be the ideal host, offering visitors coffee and putting them at ease. In doing so, he also makes a difference for other children and their parents.
Youth Ribbon or Koelpietje
The City of Heerlen wishes to recognize children and young people aged 8 to 18 for a special act or initiative. Residents who wish to nominate someone can do so by filling out and submitting the application form on the website.
