The sheep are going out again

Sheep keep the grass short in Heerlen. Nature-friendly and quiet. Instead of lawnmowers, the municipality of Heerlen is using sheep to keep the grass short in verges and green areas in the city.

Sheep herds pass through Heerlen again

Starting this month, they can be seen again in many places in the city. For example, in the Heidserpark, on Zeswegen or the Aambos. Did you know that in green areas kept short by sheep more flowers bloom? This is because sheep graze selectively. This gives seeds more chance to germinate.

Alderman Marco Peters of Management and Maintenance: "The flocks with their shepherd and the sheepdog add rural charm to our city. Moreover, this way with ecological management, we achieve the same as with the use of machinery."

The sheep are all healthy and vaccinated against Q fever. People with reduced resistance are advised, to be on the safe side, not to touch the sheep.
