The five squares
Close together in the heart of Heerlen-Centrum, you will find five small squares: Wilhelminaplein, Betaplein, Schelmenhofje, Morenhoek, and Luciushof. Their unique beauty is emphasized by colorful murals and social sofas. Each square has its own ambiance. The versatile spirit is clearly felt everywhere. They form the vibrant and intimate heart of the city. Be sure to visit them; they are wonderful places to relax, people-watch, meet up with friends, or grab a bite to eat.

Wilhelmina Square
The largest square of the five. Centuries ago, this square served as a lively cattle market. Cows and sheep changed hands here. At the beginning of the 20th century, the cattle market moved to another location in the city. Now it is a beautiful, large square with space for wonderful events and cultural activities.
Beta Square
Betaplein owes its name to the Betahuis. The Betahuis focuses on working, meeting, and inspiring. Various creative companies are located there, but the Betahuis is accessible to everyone. Are you looking for a flexible workplace? Then visit the work café, where people can work and meet in a unique environment. The square is always accessible, even if the gate suggests otherwise. The gate is always open, so feel free to take a look.
Rascals' courtyard
This romantic courtyard is named after the Schelmentoren tower. It is the newest square, which was only discovered after the house that stood on that spot was demolished in 2001. The view of the Pancratius Church and the Schelmentoren tower that was revealed was stunning, and the vacant lot was transformed into a courtyard. It is now a popular place to spend time.
Morenhoek
De Morenhoek probably got its name from the fact that there used to be a cemetery here. During the Spanish occupation around 1600, the deceased Moors who served in the Spanish military were buried here. From the 1960s to the early 1980s, the discotheque "De Morenhoek" was located on this intimate square, and since 1985, dancers have been finding their way to De Morenhoek at the "Swing Inn" dance school.
In the summer, it is a unique venue for open-air dance parties. From De Morenhoek, you can reach Pancratiusstraat via the Creative Corridor, co-working spaces for creative entrepreneurs. The square features a Social Sofa, and one of the walls is decorated with a beautiful mural.
Lucius Court
Probably the least known square of the five. It cannot be reached via public roads, but this special place is definitely worth experiencing. The green gem exudes a serene tranquility. It is quiet and peaceful, yet you are still in the middle of the city. You can reach it via the former monastery complex on Putgraaf. Weller has completely renovated this monastery complex, which has retained its unique old character. Various social organizations have established themselves here; you are welcome to come and take a look. Don't forget to visit the beautiful former monastery garden, De Luciushof!
