A fine green space for The Oak

Alderman Marco Peters of Management and Maintenance and Martien Nillesen of Weller, together with residents and volunteers, officially opened the newly landscaped garden at senior citizen complex De Eik. The greening is part of the rigorous greening in Eikenderveld. A unique collaboration between municipality, residents and housing corporation with the same goal for everyone.

The initiative for the garden came about this year after a joint visit by the Alderman and his senior assistant. On that occasion, residents asked if they could use the existing outdoor space to create a garden. An initiative that fits perfectly with the municipality's plans for rigorous greening of Eikenderveld.

Collaborate

Marco Peters saw another opportunity. There was also a request from Weller to work together to modify the area around De Eik. "Like Weller, we want to do the maximum to make the outdoor space more beautiful, greener and more livable. And to transform it into a nice meeting place that people can enjoy together. When residents are involved with their environment and with each other, something beautiful and powerful is created. That has ensured at the Oak that we have now been able to open this wonderful garden together."

Flowering perennials

The garden at senior complex the Oak has many perennials that bloom profusely. The entire garden is arranged naturally, with fruit trees and native shrubs. The green sedum roof of the canopy provides cooling and is perfect place for bees and other insects. We used an old traffic light as a vegetable garden box and an old bus stop sign was transformed into an insect hotel. Residents can also use a mini library.

Well maintained

According to resident and volunteer Math Kessen, all the residents are delighted with the garden.
"We all enjoy going outside now and have a great place to meet. And of course we are going to do our utmost to maintain it well. It has to remain a beautiful garden."
