The Yellow Earth with Mirror event on October 12, 2025 looks back at the artwork Heerlen Soil and Mirrors that American artist and icon of Land Art Robert Smithson commissioned in the then Beaujean sand pit in 1969

At the Royal Theater Heerlen, international speakers such as Liza Le Feuvre, director of the Holt/Smithson Foundation from New Mexico will speak and Alderman Jordy Clemens will unveil a marker on the exact location of the artwork at the time, on the Vrijheerenberg field. A film program concludes the day at Royal Theater Heerlen.

  • 13:00 Introduction by Jean Bernard Koeman and Lene ter Haar
  • 13:10 Interview Lisa Le Feuvre, director Holt/Smithson Foundation by Jean Bernard Koeman
  • 13:30 Keynote Markus Karstieß, artist; curator of the exhibition Robert Smithson in Europe taking place from the end of September at the Josef Albers Museum in Bottrop, Germany
  • 14:00 Panel discussion with:
    - Anne Reenders, program director Land Art Contemporary
    - Lisa Le Feuvre, director Holt/Smithson Foundation
    - Dr. Eva Schmidt and Markus Karstieß
