The City and Woonpunt are set to renovate the Kasteelbuurt neighborhood
The City of Heerlen and Woonpunt have agreed to renovate the Kasteelbuurt neighborhood. They want to make the neighborhood more attractive and better suited for the future.

What's going to happen?
38 houses on Markgravenstraat will be demolished. We may build 32 new homes and 16 apartments in their place. We are still looking into this. We will renovate the other 68 homes in the Kasteelbuurt neighborhood.
The Kasteelbuurt neighborhood is located on Markgravenstraat and Wingerdweg. It is a historic mining community near Hoensbroek Castle in the Terschuren district. The neighborhood features a distinctive architectural style: the Amsterdam School.
Why are we revitalizing the neighborhood?
Currently, the neighborhood is mainly home to low-income residents. The city and Woonpunt want to increase the variety of housing options. More expensive rental units will also be added. This will allow a more diverse group of people to live in the neighborhood. Current residents will be able to continue living in their own neighborhood.
The new homes will be built in the same architectural style as the old ones. The character of the neighborhood will be preserved.
Alderman Marco Peters : "Together with Woonpunt, we are transforming the Kasteelbuurt into a beautiful part of Hoensbroek once again. It will be a pleasant place to live. We are taking the neighborhood’s history into account. By adding a variety of housing types, people will be able to continue living in their own neighborhood."
Wim Hazeu, director of Woonpunt, says: "We’re not just investing in new homes. We’re improving the entire area. We’re working together to create a neighborhood that’s ready for the future. The neighborhood fits in with the character of the Kasteelbuurt. We’re thinking of the people who live there now and of future residents."
What do we do now?
The municipality and Woonpunt have put their plans in writing. They will be further developing these plans in the coming period. Local residents will receive information about the plans and the next steps.
