Municipality of Heerlen launches Heerlenkiest.nl
Today, the municipality of Heerlen is launching Heerlenkiest.nl, a new website where residents can find all the information they need about the municipal elections on March 18 in one convenient place. With this platform, the municipality aims to support residents in casting their votes in a well-informed manner and to further lower the threshold for voting.

The municipal elections focus on issues that affect residents on a daily basis, such as neighborhood design, facilities, quality of life, and the future of the city. By providing all the important information in one place, Heerlenkiest.nl makes it easier to understand the elections and the choices you can make.
Information close to home
The website provides residents with practical and accessible information that is relevant to their own living environment. On a landing page for their own neighborhood, residents can find the polling stations and candidates in their district. The website also includes:
- Overviews of polling stations by neighborhood
- Information about candidates from the neighborhood
- Accessible summaries of party positions
- The option to receive a voice reminder by email or text message
Encouraging people to vote
In the 2022 municipal elections, voter turnout in Heerlen averaged 42.2 percent. In some neighborhoods, turnout was even lower. With Heerlenkiest.nl, the municipality wants to provide residents with additional support in finding information easily and preparing well for voting. The municipality wants to contribute to greater involvement in local democracy.
Mayor Roel Wever:
“I cannot emphasize enough that the city council makes decisions that directly affect the daily lives of every resident. It is therefore important that as many residents of Heerlen as possible exercise their right to vote. I can well imagine that some residents of Heerlen think 'politicians don't listen to us anyway', but if you don't vote, the influence you can have as a citizen on your city and surroundings is simply lost, and that is a great pity. Voting is a right in the Netherlands and I would advise all residents of Heerlen to exercise it."
