Municipality signs letter of intent: 60 rental homes on Spoorsingel
The municipality of Heerlen has entered into a letter of intent with Wonen Limburg Accent on the development of two sites at Spoorsingel and the first phase in the development of Willemskwartier. Wonen Limburg Accent, Wonen Limburg and the municipality want to build on this site, and on a location already owned by Wonen Limburg, 39 social housing units and 21 housing units in the middle rental category.
The letter of intent is the first step in the implementation of the Willemskwartier area vision adopted by the council in 2022. The homes will be located in the Spoorsingel area, including on the site of the former Sporthotel.
Development Process
The signing of the letter of intent marks the beginning of the Willemskwartier development process. It is the visible basis for a broader restructuring. The joint goal of Wonen Limburg (Accent) and the municipality is to eventually develop the entire inner area between Spoorsingel, Kempkensweg and Willemstraat. This will make it a strong and attractive neighborhood, strengthening the connection between the center and Maankwartier.
Mediterranean character
Alderman Marco Peters of spatial planning: "In this agreement lies an important task for both parties. We are going to make an effort to preserve and strengthen the Willemskwartier's own style and atmosphere. Part of this is the Mediterranean character that must be reflected in the design and, for example, the choice of materials. In addition, the authentic character and the (various) historical characteristics will be preserved; both of the buildings, the valuable small-scale ribbon development, the original character and the functionality of the place. Thus we strengthen the identity of this place and the connection with the center and the Maankwartier".
Starters and seniors
Board chairman Ger Peeters of Wonen Limburg: "With these new, affordable homes, we are focusing mainly on starters and seniors. For them, the location of this neighborhood with the already present facilities is ideal. The diversity created here undoubtedly contributes to a nice, livable place to live for young and old. With this we also contribute to the future of Heerlen-North".
