Heerlen receives 11.3 million for making homes more sustainable and renovating

The municipality of Heerlen has once again received a substantial government contribution from the Volkshuisvestingsfonds. Now more than 11.3 million euros. This will enable the municipality to renovate and make 320 additional homes more sustainable. We will also use this contribution to convert vacant buildings into additional homes. An improvement that represents a major investment in the liveability of vulnerable neighbourhoods in the north of the city.

Casper Gelderblom , Alderman Wonen & Milieu of the municipality of Heerlen is pleased with this new award: "This award once again emphasises the urgency of our task and the strength of our social and sustainable approach. The government is making a serious contribution to the Heerlen Sustainability Offensive. We will be making thousands of homes permanently more sustainable in the coming years. This means lower energy bills for Heerlen households and good news for the environment. We can also use this subsidy to make vacant buildings habitable. This government contribution is therefore an important step towards a future in which living, sustainability and liveability go hand in hand."

Successful applications account for more than 71 million

The award of these 11.3 million fits in a series of successful subsidy applications in the field of housing in 2.5 years for the municipality of Heerlen. In total, it concerns more than 71 million euros in this period. Alderman Gelderblom: “The results of the past few years show that collaboration is the key to success. That is why we attach great value to our strong ties with the Stadsregio Parkstad, the Alliantie Heerlen-Noord and all our residential partners in the city and region.”

In South Limburg, the municipalities of Maastricht (€11.4 million) and Sittard-Geleen (€10.6 million) will also receive a contribution from the Volkshuishuisvestingsfonds. In total, the South Limburg municipalities will receive €41.2 million. This is 27.5% of the total budget of €150 million.

Heerlen-North

Improving vulnerable homes is an important part of the 25-year approach in Heerlen-Noord to improve the liveability and safety in neighbourhoods. The allocation from the Volkshuisvestingsfonds is an important contribution to this approach. With the new subsidy, Heerlen can not only make homes more sustainable, but also renovate vacant buildings and make them habitable. In this way, we create extra living space in Heerlen-Noord and give a new impetus to vulnerable parts of our city.
