Heerlen makes case for reuse

The municipality Heerlen embraces circularity by giving a second life to furniture and clothing in its own home as well. In the wedding hall, for example, sustainable products and services have been deliberately chosen in cooperation with local entrepreneurs. In addition, the municipality first organizes a clothing exchange internally for its employees to also give clothing a second life. Soon this will also be organized externally, in cooperation with partners in the city.

A second life for clothing

The last week of May, employees of the municipality can bring and take away vintage clothes at an internal clothing exchange. In this way, we combat waste and give clothing a second life. We will also organize the clothing exchange for the Heerlen students of VISTA college through a challenge next month.

New (reused) life in wedding hall

Starting this year, people can say yes to each other again in the wedding hall in City Hall. The wedding hall has a characteristic architectural style from the 1940s, but now modern and sustainable innovations have been added. For the renovation of the wedding hall, a conscious choice was made to use sustainable products and services. Chairs were given a second life and a local entrepreneur made a table from recycled pews.

Recently there is also a beautiful Schimmel wing in the wedding hall. This grand piano was built at the end of the eighties and has been given a second life thanks to Piano Crescendo from Hoensbroek.

"Reusing materials and resources is good for the environment, but also unlocks new economic value. Our clothing exchange and choice of locally made circular furniture underline this. Slowly but surely, circularity is thus becoming the new normal!" said Alderman for the Environment and Circularity Casper Gelderblom.
