Reusable hard-cup cups for a clean city
The City of Heerlen and H.V.V. De Winkbülle are joining forces with the hospitality industry. In 2027, reusable hard-cup cups will be used for the first time to promote a more sustainable carnival and a cleaner city.

For safety reasons, glassware is not permitted at outdoor events. Disposable plastic cups are not sustainable, and cups left lying around litter our city. In Heerlen, steps are now being taken toward a sustainable alternative: reusable hard-cup cups featuring a distinctive Heerlen design. The reusable cups reduce waste and litter. They save costs for businesses and the municipality, such as cleaning expenses. Through a deposit system, they also contribute to Carnival and other events in Heerlen.
How does it work?
Visitors purchase a reusable cup for a small fee. This cup can be easily exchanged for a clean one throughout the day. At the end of the day, the cup can be returned. We use the remaining funds to reimburse customers for their cups and replace any broken ones. We also use these funds to support the city carnival and other events in the city.
The cups will be used for the first time during the 2027 carnival. Following an evaluation, the program will be rolled out to other events throughout the city. With this initiative, Heerlen is taking a significant step toward cleaner, more sustainable, and future-proof events.
