Commemoration and walk Cemetery Akerstraat
Guided tourDate:
Time: -
Location: Akerstraat Cemetery

Have you ever been to the cemetery on Heerlen's Akerstraat? If so, you have undoubtedly seen it: the large grave monument in the extension of the path leading from the Akerstraat to the center. It is a tomb monument for Belgian soldiers who died in Heerlen during the First World War. Their final resting place is one of the few visible signs of the involvement of the municipality of Heerlen in the conflict called "the Great War" in our neighboring countries. Next Saturday, May 3, marks exactly one hundred years since the grave monument was unveiled and the Heerlen municipality assumed perpetual Health .
Between 12:00 and 12:45, there will be a small memorial ceremony. Roel Leers, an active member of the Friends of the Akerstraat Cemetery, will speak a welcome address. Then Heerlen mayor Roel Wever will speak. Marcel Put, historian of the Ouwe Leem Foundation, will then talk briefly about the history of the monument and about the persons resting in the grave. We will conclude with a minute of silence in memory of the deceased.
After the ceremony, Roel Leers and Marcel Put will take those interested for a walk around the cemetery and tell stories at and about some special graves, such as those of the De Ceva family, whose crypt is on display, of Alexandra Haex - Van Geen and of Josephine Lempers-Jacobs ('t roeëd Truud). In addition, former cemetery administrator Rene Gulikers will also be present to give explanations about the city cemetery, which was inaugurated more than 200 years ago (1820).
The entire event is free to attend.
