Dive into the mystery of Heerlen's Schelmentoren!

The Schelmentoren is the only part of the former medieval land fortress still standing. Archaeologists and historians estimate that the tower is about 800 years old. But why the tower was ever built, that is still a mystery....

Was the tower a residential tower of the Lords of Are-Hochstenbach, who ruled Heerlen around 1200? Or was the tower built as a military defense tower? And what stood there first: the Schelment tower or the land fortress? Or were they built at the same time? These are the questions we will try to answer during this event.

The afternoon consists of two parts: first, public historians Kris Förster and Jody Martens will enter into conversation with Parkstad archaeologist Hilde van Neste, city historian Anouck van Aalst and architectural historian André Vierssen. All three will be put to the test from their knowledge and expertise about the history of the Schelmentoren. This interview will take place in the Nieuwe Nor, with a beautiful view of the Schelmentoren. The interview will be recorded live and will be part of the new podcast 'Stories of Limburg'.

After the interview, we take a walk together along the places where remnants of the former land fort can still be seen. We also climb the spectacular tower of the Pancratius Church!
