Identification at municipal elections

Will you be voting in the municipal elections on March 18, 2026? If so, you will need to show identification at the polling station.

Approach

Bring your ID with you when you go to vote.

Do you also vote for someone else?

And do you do that with an authorization on the voting pass? You will need a copy of the identity document of the person for whom you are casting the vote. You may also show the copy on your phone or tablet. The copy must be clearly legible. If you wish, you may the social security number (bsn) unreadablemake. This reduces the risk of misuse of the identity document.

Description

When you vote, you must identify yourself. Identifying means proving who you are.

In elections, please identify yourself with:

  • A Dutch passport, driver's license or identity card
  • a passport, driver's license, or identity card issued by a member state of the European Union, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein
  • a passport or identity card issued by Switzerland
  • A foreigner's document issued in the Netherlands

Your identity document may expire no more than 5 years prior to March 18, 2026.

No ID or ID that is too old

Don't have an ID or has it expired more than 5 years? Then request a proxy from the municipality. Then someone else can vote for you.
