Roman cup excavated in Heerlen named Limburg Top Find 2025
During the Limburg Archaeology Day 2025 at the Limburgs Museum, the cup inscribed FLAC was voted the Limburg Top Find! This unique find, excavated in 2024 on the Raadhuisplein in Heerlen, was found in an early Roman tomb near the intersection of two Roman roads. This find offers new insights into the development of the Roman settlement Coriovallum, the predecessor of Heerlen.
A personal story from the past
The cup was found in a grave along with other objects. Because of these early Roman relics, archaeologists assume that this is the grave of a Roman soldier who may have carried the name Flaccus. Such objects help archaeologists bring the past to life and give us a glimpse of how people lived and died 2,000 years ago.
