Interventions for safer school routes

The Municipality of Heerlen has begun installing traffic calming measures on a number of school routes in the city. These include speed humps and plateaus to reduce the speed of traffic and increase traffic safety.

The hazards on school-home routes to high schools is markedly different from elementary schools. The main issues there are assessing the behavior of other road users, the danger of blind spots on trucks, recognizing dangerous points along the way and the dangers of talking on the phone, using an app and listening to music on a bicycle.

Alderman Marco Peters van Mobiliteit: “Children and young people must be able to get to school safely in our city. We are working on that. With our road safety approach, we are therefore tackling school environments and school routes at an accelerated pace. All road users and the neighbourhood will benefit from that.”
