The municipality and all housing associations in Heerlen have an urgency scheme to help people in emergency situations find housing quickly. You can apply for an urgency declaration yourself to get priority when finding housing.

Submitting an urgent application is free of charge. We know that there are organizations that offer to help you with the urgent application. They charge a lot of money for this.Our advice: do not use their services. 

Description

Social housing is intended for people with an income below a certain threshold. If you earn more than this, you will usually not be eligible. Only a small proportion of social housing is rented to people with a higher income.

There is often a waiting period. This often varies per neighborhood. Are you urgently looking for a home? You may be able to apply for an urgent housing certificate. 

Requirements

The Requirements be eligible for social housing are:

  • You are 18 years of age or older.
  • You are a Dutch citizen or have a valid residence permit.
  • You have economic or social ties to the region.
  • Most social housing is subject to an income limit:
    • Do you live alone? Then your income may not exceed €49,669 (2025) / €51,537 (2026).
    • Are there more people living in your home? Then your income may be €54,847 (2025) / €56,910 (2026).

You are registered with an organization that allocates social housing in this municipality.
