Jo Coenen gets to work for Hoensbroek-Centrum

Internationally renowned architect and urban planner Jo Coenen will be working as an advisor-supervisor for the Hoensbroek-Centrum area development. This means that he will be designing and providing urban planning advice on the development of Hoensbroek-Centrum. As supervisor, he will monitor the quality of all plans for Hoensbroek-Centrum.

Role in Hoensbroek-Center

Jo Coenen will act as advisor-supervisor in the development of Hoensbroek-Centrum. He will advise on the development of the four sub-areas and ensure that this is incorporated into a vision for the future functioning of Hoensbroek's historic lifeline. From Hoensbroek Castle, through the center area, to the former Emma state mine.

About Jo Coenen

Jo Coenen was born and raised in Hoensbroek. He is one of the Netherlands' leading architects and urban planners. He grew up in Hoensbroek and obtained his architecture degree from Eindhoven University of Technology. Since 1979, he has run his own firm, now based in Maastricht, Amsterdam, and various European cities. His designs include the Public Library in Heerlen, the Netherlands Architecture Institute in Rotterdam, and the Vestedatoren in Eindhoven. He was also responsible for urban developments such as the Céramique site in Maastricht and the KNSM Island in Amsterdam. From 2000 to 2004, he was Chief Government Architect.

Jo received several awards, the last one in 2025. He was awarded the Medal of Honor of the Province of Limburg in recognition of his exceptional services to the field of architecture and urban planning, both in Limburg and far beyond.
