Kids Culture Week 2025 brings primary school children into contact with Heerlen's heritage
On Monday 2 June, Tuesday 3 June and Thursday 5 June, the Kids Culture Week will take place again this year for all Heerlen primary schools. This year, groups 5 and 6 are up. The Kids Culture Week is an initiative of the municipality of Heerlen to introduce children to the cultural offerings in Heerlen, but especially to the rich history of the city. This year, the theme is 'The year of Heerlen heritage'. Pupils discover how the history of their city is brought to life through art and culture. The Roman Museum, Theater Heerlen (PLT), Tinkers Guild, Filmhuis de Spiegel, the Dutch Mining Museum and SCHUNCK are participating in this project.
Fifth Edition
After 4 successful editions, the participating partners in Heerlen have joined forces again to create an inspiring cultural program for the students. This year, groups 5 and 6 are up.
The program
The children show their dance moves and writing talent at SCHUNCK, delve into the mining past at the Dutch Mining Museum, visit a Roman villa at the Roman Museum (in de Vondst) and design their own building at Tinkers Guild. At Filmhuis de Spiegel the students make their own film poster. The days are concluded with the theatre performance 'de Tijdreiziger' by Nigel Otermans in Theater Heerlen (PLT).
This year, the program also focuses on the Year of Heerlen Heritage. Think of the glass palace where SCHUNCK is located or the PLT where the mine closure was declared in 1965 by Joop den Uyl and of course the beautiful Royal cinema from 1938 where Filmhuis de Spiegel offers workshops. At the Roman Museum, Heerlen's Roman past is discussed extensively and at the Dutch Mining Museum, students almost literally dive into the mining past.
Alderman Culture & Heritage Jordy Clemens : “We are all looking forward to a new Kids Culture Week where children from our city can discover all the beauty that Heerlen has to offer. By being involved with the history of their own city, children develop more understanding of their own environment. That connects them with each other and with the city.''
Free program
During this kids culture week, Heerlen students can sample the city's rich cultural offerings free of charge. Art, culture and heritage education are incredibly important for the development of children into creative and critical adults.
