Using childcare

You choose a daycare center, after-school care, or childminder yourself. You enter into an agreement yourself and receive the bill for the childcare. Are you having difficulty paying for childcare? You may be eligible for a contribution from the municipality.

Approach

Employers pay a contribution to the government. You are responsible for ensuring that you receive the government contribution back. You can arrange this with the tax authorities. You can do this by calling 0800-0543 (free of charge) or via www.belastingdienst.nl. This website contains all the information you need and a calculation model. This allows you to calculate what your own contribution to childcare will be. The tax authorities will then transfer an amount to your account every month.

Description

Parents can choose from the following types of childcare:

  • daycare centers for children aged 0-4 years
  • after-school care for children aged 4-13 (up to and including grade 8)
  • childminding for children aged 0-13 (up to and including grade 8)

The costs of childcare are usually paid by three parties: the employer(s), the government (tax authorities), and the parent(s).

Are you having difficulty paying for childcare? You may be eligible for a contribution from the municipality. You will receive this contribution in addition to or instead of the childcare allowance from the rijksoverheid. The municipality of Heerlen will transfer this contribution to the childcare center. You pay your own contribution yourself.

You must use childcare facilities that are listed in the National Childcare Register (LRK).

Requirements

In order to receive a subsidy from the tax authorities, the childcare facility must be registered in the national childcare register. This register is important because it means that the childcare facility is of good quality. Registered childcare facilities must meet legal quality requirements. The Municipal Health Service (GGD) checks this annually.
