Students from Broekland College bring the history of their city to life!
In the context of the Year of Heerlen Heritage, students from Broeklandcollege and the Heemkundevereniging Hoensbroek are working on a special heritage project: telling the story of the Second World War through photos and texts. Together with their classmates, they are recording the history of their city by visualizing and documenting memorials that were important during the war years.
The students take current photos of historical locations, such as monuments and memorials, that still serve as a reminder of the events of the Second World War. The new images are compared with old photos from that time, creating a powerful contrast between the past and the present. In addition to taking photos, the students also write short stories about the significance of these places for Hoensbroek during the war. These stories give the memorials extra emotional and historical value, and help to make the past visible to a wider audience.
The exhibition of this project can be admired from April 10, 2025. The works are exhibited in front of the windows of the SCHUNCK Library in Hoensbroek-Centrum and in front of the windows of the music room of the Broeklandcollege, where they can be seen until May 13. The exhibition is freely accessible to everyone.
