Students at Broekland College bring their town's history to life!
As part of the Year of Heerlen Heritage, students from Broekland College and the Hoensbroek Ceremonial Society are working on a special heritage project: telling the story of World War II through photographs and texts. Together with their classmates, they are recording the history of their town by visualizing and documenting memorial sites that were important during the war years.
Students take current photographs of historic sites, such as monuments and memorials, that still serve as reminders of the events of World War II. The new footage is compared with old photographs from that time, creating a powerful contrast between the past and the present. In addition to taking photographs, students write short stories about the significance of these places to Hoensbroek during the war. These stories give the memorial sites additional emotional and historical value, and help make the past visible to a wider audience.
The exhibition of this project can be admired from April 10, 2025. The works are exhibited in front of the windows of the SCHUNCK Library in Hoensbroek-Centrum and in front of the windows of the music room of the Broeklandcollege, where they can be seen until May 13. The exhibition is freely accessible to everyone.
