Lecture: Judiciary in the prison tower

Lecture

Date:

Location: Savelberg Monastery (Gasthuisstraat 2, Heerlen)

In December 2025, at the end of the Year of Heerlen Heritage, the Schelmentoren will open to the public. In the meantime, this medieval tower will be redesigned and the municipality will organize various activities that tell the history of the Schelmentoren and medieval Heerlen. One of the activities is a series of lectures.

On Sunday 28 September, historian Martin van der Weerden will give a lecture on the judiciary in the prison tower. That is what the Schelmentoren used to be called. In the Middle Ages, this tower served as a prison, among other things. The lecture will take place in the chapel of the Savelbergklooster (Gasthuisstraat 2, Heerlen) and is free of charge. Walk-in: 13:30. Start lecture: 14:00.

More information will follow soon.
