Louis Thijssen appointed to the Order of Orange-Nassau

Heerlen resident Louis (or Wiet) Thijssen has been appointed to the Order of Orange-Nassau. Mayor Roel Wever surprised him with a ribbon during a square celebration in Lindeveld. In recent decades, Louis Thijssen has devoted himself in an exceptional way to society. His voluntary efforts cover a wide range of activities within the municipality of Heerlen, focusing on connection, culture, heritage, urban development and social cohesion.

Since 1999 he has been continuously active within Stichting Buurtbelangen Lindeveld, including as secretary and chairman. For more than twenty years he has been intensively involved in numerous neighborhood activities, such as the square festival, St. Nicholas celebrations, neighborhood dinners and redevelopment of public spaces. He was also an initiator of the neighborhood support in Lindeveld and recently co-organizer of the construction of 94 facade gardens.

He also made an important contribution to the Roman Quarter as a volunteer and initiator, including through the "Showcase Project," which made Roman heritage visible in the city. His efforts were decisive for the success of this long-running project.

Louis Thijssen also plays a connecting role in Heerlen's cultural sector. He was involved in initiatives such as Heerlen "Heron," the "Megapool Hall of Fame," "Gallery XXL" and the PAND Foundation, supporting and professionally empowering young people and local artists.

In addition to his administrative and organizing roles, he has also distinguished himself as a guide, writer and exhibition volunteer. He led numerous mural walks for Stichting S*PRAY, several other walks for the VVV in Heerlen, wrote a book on the Ir. Dinger garden, and was actively involved in exhibitions on the architects Stuyt and Peutz. With his knowledgeable and enthusiastic style, he managed to engage a wide audience in the heritage and art of Heerlen.

The sum of this long-term, multifaceted and selfless commitment makes the social significance of his volunteer work evident. His contribution to the social and cultural fabric of Heerlen is lasting, inspiring and of great value.

We warmly congratulate Louis Thijssen on his appointment as Member in the Order of Orange-Nassau and thank him for his commitment to so much good and beauty in our city.
