Taking the Stairway to School
Elementary school De Windwijzer in Heerlerbaan successfully participated in the Trap-Step-Stap challenge. To celebrate, Alderman Marco Peters of Mobility handed out the trophy to pupils of the school.
As many children as possible healthy and safe to school. Not by car. But by bike, by scooter or on foot. That is the goal of the Trap-Step-Stap Challenge.
Beautiful Result
The children of elementary school De Windwijzer called on children and parents in a video message to come to school by foot, scooter or bicycle as much as possible. This led to great results. During the challenge, 81% (191) of the children came to school by bike, scooter or on foot. In the previous week, the figure was 42% (113). Only 13% (30) of the children were brought to school by car during the challenge. That's more than half of normal, at 28% (62). Of course, all children and parents are going to try to keep this up.
Healthy and Safe
Marco Peters:
"Coming to school by bike, scooter, or on foot is healthy and contributes to greater safety. If fewer children are brought by car, it also makes the school environment safer. Great that the children have responded to this in large numbers and set a good example. I am proud of the children!"
Measures
Now that the Windwijzer has completed the challenge, the municipality is going to meet with the school to take the next step. Together we will look at what measures are needed to make the school environment safer. We will then realize these.
