Museum presentation Mines in Figures

Exhibition

Date:   to

Location: Dutch Mining Museum

The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) and the Netherlands Mining Museum together present Mines in Figures: a new timeline and museum exhibition that uses statistics to bring the rich history of the mining region to life.

CBS and Netherlands Mining Museum launch joint timeline and museum presentation around statistics on mining past The Central Bureau of Statistics celebrated 50 years in Heerlen in 2024. This was a direct consequence of the mine closure: CBS came to Heerlen as replacement employment. As part of this anniversary, CBS entered into cooperation with the Dutch Mining Museum. Together they worked on an overview of statistics about the mining past. The result will be on display at the Nederlands Mijnmuseum and on the CBS website from October 28, 2025.

The data collected by CBS on mining history has been processed into a timeline on the CBS website. The findings are also exhibited in a permanent overview presentation titled "Mines in Figures" on the first floor of the Netherlands Mining Museum's main location, the BLACK floor.

This makes the immense impact of the mines even more visible within the museum. Furthermore, this presentation clarifies the (historical) context of Dutch coal mining for visitors immediately upon entry.

Curious? Then visit the Dutch Mining Museum, open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., starting Oct. 28. Looking for even more information? Then also visit this webpage with CBS's timeline (available from Oct. 28).

This project takes place within History Month and is made possible in part by the Year of Heerlen Heritage 2025.
