Entrepreneurs in Heerlerheide are once again investing together in their town center

The shopkeepers in the center of Heerlerheide have made their choice. They want a Business Investment Zone (BIZ) for the third time. The Municipal Executive agreed to this today.

What does this mean for entrepreneurs?

Retailers pay an additional levy of 0.2% of the WOZ value, on top of the property tax. This money goes to the Vereniging BIZ Heerlerheide (Heerlerheide Business Improvement District Association). The association uses the money to make the center more attractive, safer, and livelier. They do this by, for example:

  •  Decorating the center
  • More greenery to be planted
  • Organizing events
  • Increasing the sense of security

How does a BIZ work?

A BIZ is a tool created by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs. The municipality will only conduct a survey if entrepreneurs themselves request it. If a majority is in favor, a BIZ will be established.

The municipality collects all contributions. After deducting costs, the municipality gives the money to the BIZ association. Each year, the association explains how it has spent the money. Twice a year, the municipality and the association discuss whether everyone is complying with the agreements.

What was the result of the vote?

In January 2026, the entrepreneurs voted. The result was clear:

  •  59.38% of entrepreneurs voted
  • 81.58% of voters were in favor of the BIZ.
  • Those voting in favor represent a higher WOZ value than those voting against.

All three Requirements a BIZ have been more than met. The BIZ will run from 2026 to 2030.
