We are also starting to make homes more sustainable in Eikenderveld

The municipality of Heerlen is taking a new step in its sustainability offensive. In Vrieheide, work has begun on the white houses. Now the municipality is also starting a targeted neighborhood approach in Eikenderveld as part of the Heerlen Verduurzaamt (Heerlen Becomes Sustainable) project. This involves 300 homes.

Homeowners in part of the neighborhood can receive assistance and financial support in making their homes more sustainable. This applies to homes with energy labels D, E, F, or G and a WOZ value of up to €305,000 (reference date 2022). The municipality helps by assisting with the work.

Help with sustainability

Heerlen has received funding for this approach from the national Public Housing Fund. This will enable us to improve homes and make them more sustainable. Examples include:

  • insulation of roof, floor, and walls
  • better insulating glass
  • ventilation

This ensures greater comfort in the home, lower energy bills, and fewer problems with moisture or mold. Residents receive guidance. We reimburse part or sometimes all of the costs.

In Eikenderveld, this mainly concerns older homes in the Spoorkolonie neighborhood and some surrounding streets. These homes were often built before the war. Homes owned by housing associations are not covered by this scheme. However, we are seeking to collaborate with housing associations to see what we can do better, smarter, or more cost-effectively together.

Alderman Casper Gelderblom Housing and Environment):
“In Heerlen, we want to transform energy poverty into energy justice. Our Sustainability Offensive means that we are not waiting, but taking action. In Eikenderveld, there are many older homes where energy bills are a heavy burden. That is precisely where we are now taking action. In this way, we are making sustainability not a luxury, but something that is possible for everyone."

Personal and step by step

The municipality is working together with residents and the neighborhood organization Trots op Eikenderveld (TOE). We are talking to residents and assessing what is needed and possible for each home. Residents receive advice and guidance. The municipality helps with applying for financial support and provides assistance during implementation. We take as many concerns off your hands as possible.

Citywide and neighborhood-focused approach

Heerlen Verduurzaamt is the municipality's project to make homes more energy efficient and comfortable. In neighborhoods such as Vrieheide and Eikenderveld, we are tackling homes block by block. Across the city, residents can improve their own homes step by step.

In Vrieheide, the neighborhood approach is already in full swing. The first six blocks are complete. Work is underway on four other blocks, and ten new blocks are in preparation. We have already held 269 discussions with residents at their kitchen tables.
We are taking this experience with us to Eikenderveld. After Vrieheide and Eikenderveld, we will also start in Beersdal and Schaesbergerveld.
