Opening performance Schelmentoren and closing of the Year of Heerlen Heritage

On Saturday, December 20, the renovated Schelmentoren will be festively opened with the open-air performance: Hier brandt het licht (Here burns the light). This event marks the conclusion of the Year of Heerlen Heritage and signals a new chapter for one of the city's iconic monuments.

After extensive renovation and restoration, the Schelmentoren tower is reopening its doors to the public. Three floors of the tower will soon be open to visitors, each with its own story to tell. We will symbolically mark the opening with a free open-air performance. A poetic and playful performance that connects the past, present, and future of Heerlen. With this evening, Heerlen concludes the Year of Heerlen Heritage. A year full of initiatives by enthusiastic Heerlen residents, stories, and celebrations surrounding the city's rich history.

Three women, three stories

During the performance, three women meet at the tower. They each come from a different era and have their own view of Heerlen. Their meeting symbolizes the city's constant renewal and the power of its heritage. Hier brandt het licht (Here burns the light) is an ode to what remains, what changes, and what is reborn.
