Rd4 and Municipalities Tackle Litter Around Dumpster Areas
Rd4 and four municipalities—Heerlen, Beekdaelen, Brunssum, and Kerkrade—are launching a new initiative together. We want to reduce the amount of trash left next to the underground containers for glass, paper, and textiles.
People regularly leave trash next to the trash containers. Boxes, glass, bags, and bulky items make the area dirty. This leads to:
- Annoyance among residents
- Pests
- Additional cleanup costs
What are we going to do?
We are improving 10 locations where trash is often left next to dumpsters:
- Containers are getting a makeover
- New stickers on the containers
- An information sign at each location
- Information for residents on what to do when a container is full
Why does this work?
A clean place encourages people to keep it that way. When a location looks well-maintained, people are less likely to leave trash behind.
We work together with local residents. Through the Rd4 app, they receive updates and tips on how to keep the neighborhood clean.
What can you do when a container is full?
- DO NOT place your trash next to the dumpster
- Report a full container using the QR code on the container
- Find another container location
- Take your trash home with you

This is our message. An Rd4 employee came up with this slogan. He cleans containers and picks up trash every day.
Which 10 locations?
- Heerlen: Eikstraat, Mesdagstraat, and Rozestraat
- Beekdaelen: Hiltostraat and Stationstraat
- Brunssum: Sint Gregoriuslaan and Kennedylaan
- Kerkrade: Josephinaplein, Olmenplein, and Vincent van Goghplein
We'll see if the approach works. If it goes well, we'll expand to more locations and other municipalities.
