Justice in the prison tower
LectureDate:
Location: Savelberg Monastery (Gasthuisstraat 2, Heerlen)

In December 2025, at the end of the Year of Heerlen Heritage, the Schelmentoren will open to the public. In the meantime, this medieval tower will be redesigned and the municipality will organize various activities that tell the history of the Schelmentoren and medieval Heerlen. One of the activities is a series of lectures.
On Sunday, Sept. 28, historian Martin van der Weerden will give a lecture on the administration of justice in the prison tower. This is how the Schelment tower used to be called. In the Middle Ages, this tower served, among other things, as a prison. The lecture takes place in the chapel of the Savelberg Monastery (Gasthuisstraat 2, Heerlen) and is free of charge. Entrance: 1:30 p.m. Start lecture: 2 p.m.
