The Giants' Festival on Saturday 14 June promises to be a 'grand' spectacle in the centre of Heerlen. After the unveiling of the new giantess Amaka, a procession with more than 50 giants, music and dance groups will pass through the streets of our city. Afterwards, Amaka will marry her lover Lucius on the Pancratiusplein. The giants will remain in the centre until 17:00 to be admired. Time for a giant selfie?!
Unveiling
During the morning, the giants from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France will be built on the Burgemeester van Grunsvenplein in front of Theater Heerlen. At 12:40, Amaka, the new giantess of Heerlen, will be unveiled and presented to the public.
Civil registry registration
At 13:00 Amaka leaves, followed by a procession of giants, music and dance groups via the Geerstraat to the City Office in the Geleenstraat. Here she is awaited by her beloved Lucius, and Amaka is festively registered in the (giant) population register of the municipality of Heerlen.
Parade and procession
After this, Lucius and Amaka take the parade from the giants' procession, after which they join up behind. The procession moves via the Pancratiusplein, Pancratiusstraat, Bongerd, Oranje Nassaustraat, Stationsstraat, Saroleastraat, Van der Maessenstraat, Honigmanstraat and the Geleenstraat back to the Pancratiusplein.
Wedding
The giant groups spread out over the city centre and can be admired there until 5pm. Lucius and Amaka remain on the Pancratiusplein where they exchange their vows. In this way, the lovers are reunited after almost 2000 years.
The Giants Festival is free to enter.
