Renew or extend driver's license online
You have a driver's license and want to renew it. Or you have passed the exam for another type of vehicle and want to add this category to your driving license. You can arrange this online via RDW.nl.

Approach
Here's how to apply for a driver's license online:
- You go to a approved photographer:
- You have a passport photo taken.
- You put your signature.
- You provide your e-mail address.
- You pay the cost for this to the photographer.
- The photographer sends your photo and signature digitally to the RDW.
- The RDW will send you an e-mail. It will tell you if you can renew your driver's license online.
- Go to the RDW site.
- Log in with the DigiD app (with ID check).
- Fill in the details.
- You pay for the driver's license via iDEAL.
- You will receive an e-mail from the RDW after 2 working days. This will tell you when you can pick up your driver's license at municipality.
- You will pick up your driver's license at municipality. Bring your current driver's license with you. You will turn it in.
- Get your driver's license within 3 months. After that, this is no longer possible. You must then make a new application.
You do not need to make an appointment to pick up your driver's license.

Description
A driver's license shows that you are authorized to drive a motor vehicle. Each vehicle has its own driving license category. Your license shows which categories you are authorized to drive vehicles.
A new driver's license is usually valid for 10 years. A driving license with category C, C1, D, D1 and/or E is valid for 5 years. Are you older than 65 years? Then your driving license is not valid for as long. This is because you must have a medical examination from the age of 75. Read more about your driving license from age 75 on Rijksoverheid.nl.
You can apply for a driver's license online if:
- you have passed a new category
- your driver's license is about to expire
Terms
The main requirements for renewing your license or applying for a new category online are:
- You have a Dutch driver's license.
- You are applying for a license renewal or category extension.
- You apply for the additional category within 3 years of your driving test. Otherwise, you must take the exam again.
- You are registered with the municipality.
- You have added the ID check to the DigiD app. You can find a handy step-by-step plan for this on the DigiD website.
- You can do online banking with iDEAL.
Do you not live in the Netherlands? Then the main conditions for renewing your driver's license are:
- You have a Dutch driver's license.
- You are applying for a license renewal or category extension.
- You apply for the additional category within 3 years of your driving test. Otherwise, you must take the exam again.
- You have added the ID check to the DigiD app. You can find a handy step-by-step plan for this on the DigiD website.
- You can do online banking with iDEAL.
- You live in another EU country for your studies.
You are not a student? Then exchange your driving license for a driving license of the country where you live. - Or you live in a country outside the EU and:
- You are not registered at an address in the Netherlands
- you have the nationality of an EU/EFTA country
- there is an address in the Netherlands where you can receive mail
Check on CBR.nl whether you need to complete a Health Declaration. CBR then assesses whether you are fit to drive. Sometimes CBR needs more information. Then, for example, you need to be examined by a doctor. Or take a driving test.
