Emile Roemer, King’s Commissioner in Limburg: “This is a remarkable moment. With your boundless dedication to Heerlen, you always put the city’s overall direction first. You are approachable, committed, and you energize Heerlen and its residents by offering a vision for the future. When necessary, you draw a line—this far and no further. It’s good that Heerlen is moving forward with you as mayor.”

Hannie Heine, a city council member, also spoke on behalf of the city council: “I speak for the entire council when I say that we’re glad you’re willing to stick with it for another six years! You’re a true mayor, and that’s exactly what we need.”

Heerlen is a part of me, and I am a part of Heerlen. It’s not an easy city, but no big city is easy. We have opportunities, challenges, and areas that need improvement here, but I truly wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but Heerlen. What makes me especially happy are the fantastic residents our city has; I stand up for every one of them. I’m looking forward to the next six years, and I’ve always said one thing: when I eventually step down as mayor, I want the people of Heerlen to be just a little better off. And of course, finally, I’d like to thank my wife, Miranda.
