Or should we say Coriovallum, because the history of Heerlen dates back to this Roman settlement around the year zero. Then a marketplace for agricultural products and pottery, now the heart of Parkstad, where there is always something new to discover. For a long time in the twentieth century, the city derived its identity from the mining industry in the area. After the closure of the mines, Heerlen took a long time to regain its vibrant character. Meanwhile, it is a city of young and contemporary architecture, of urbanity and greenery. Here, artists leave their mark everywhere.
