Start archaeological survey Council House Square

On November 18, an archaeological survey will begin on the Council House Square in Heerlen. We are doing this research before we redesign the square. We will be looking for traces from the Roman period. The research will take about two weeks and ADC ArcheoProjecten will carry it out.

Searching for Roman traces

Since we are going to redesign the square, this is a good time to investigate and record archaeological remains in the ground. In Heerlen, in some places you are literally standing on the ancient Roman city of Coriovallum. Raadhuisplein is close to two important Roman roads: the Via Belgica and the Via Traiana. It was an important place where people met.

"We know from previous research that there are remains from the Roman period and the Middle Ages at this location. We are now exposing, examining and preserving all the remains. In this way, we are getting closer to a more complete picture of our rich Roman and medieval past," says Alderman heritage Jordy Clemens .

Special event

During the investigation we will hold three open days during which archaeologists will provide explanations and interested parties can take a look. Everyone can watch from behind the fences and via a livestream everyone can also follow the investigation online from Monday. The livestream can be found on the page about the Town Hall Square. The open days are on Wednesday, November 20, Saturday, November 23 and Wednesday, November 27 from 2 to 5 p.m. In case of rain, the open day will be in The Find at Council House Square.

Redevelopment of Council House Square

The redesign of Raadhuisplein will start in mid-2025 and be completed by the end of the year 2025. Besides paying attention to greenery, water and liveliness, the new design also tells the story of Roman Heerlen.
