Successful weekend of free museum visits at three museums

During the International Day of Older Persons, Heerlen residents aged 55 and older were able to visit three museums in the city for free during the weekend of Oct. 5 and 6. A total of 1,161 people took advantage of this offer. That was more than 3 times as many visitors as last year during the1st edition. Then 357 55+ people visited our museums.

The first weekend of October was well attended by all three museums. The Mining Museum led the way. No less than 580 over-55s went there. SCHUNCK welcomed 482 visitors and Kasteel Hoensbroek received 99.

Alderman Marco Peters of Ouderenbeleid: “With these large numbers, it was certainly a successful 2nd edition. All these people were able to get to know the history of our city. The story of our mining, the art collection of SCHUNCK and of course Kasteel Hoensbroek. It was a great opportunity to meet each other in an interesting environment. This initiative is certainly worth repeating!”

Engaging people, encouraging encounters and mental challenge are important components of Heerlen's elderly policy. The museum action for the International Day of the Elderly contributes to this.
