Terrace permit
Do you want to place a terrace at your café or restaurant? Then you usually need a terrace permit. Even if you want to place the terrace on your own property. You can apply for a terrace permit from your municipality.
Approach
This is how you apply for an environmental permit for a patio:
- Go to the Environment Counter.
- Do the permit check.
- You will see if you need a permit. You can apply for the permit right away.
- You log in.
- You pass on:
- where the terrace should be
- Whether you choose a street, square or façade terrace
- a situation sketch
- what period you want to keep the patio open (patio season)
- what opening hours you want

- A permit on municipal land costs €142.50
- A permit on private land costs €102.15

Description
We review your application against the rules that apply to terraces. A terrace permit is valid indefinitely. Such a permit is also necessary if the terrace is on private land. You must only apply for a new terrace permit if there are changes to the business. This is the case, for example, when a new business owner takes over.
Terms
To establish a patio, you must at least have a hospitality license. In addition, your terrace must meet the following conditions, among others:
- the terrace looks neat
- terrace furniture is movable
- sufficient space remains for pedestrians
- you abide by the municipal opening hours for terraces
Term
The municipality decides within 8 weeks of receiving your application. The municipality may extend this period once.
Objection and appeal
You can object to the decision on your application. Do this within 6 weeks. Do you then disagree with the decision on the objection? Then file an appeal with the court.
