Heerlen accessible

Heerlen accessible to everyone

Everyone should be able to participate in Heerlen, even if you have a disability. That is why the municipality is working to make the city accessible to everyone. We are doing this by providing various facilities, such as the Hoge Nood app for public toilets, accessible buildings, adapted sports facilities, and activities for people with disabilities. Together, we are making Heerlen a city where everyone feels welcome.

What do we mean by accessible?

This means that everyone can participate. No one is excluded. People often think first of someone with a physical disability, such as someone in a wheelchair. But accessibility is about more people than that.

Consider also the elderly, children and young people, people with intestinal problems, and people who have difficulty reading, experience stress, or are not comfortable using digital devices. Sometimes small adjustments are needed. For example, in our services, in the way we provide information, or in how we design buildings and public spaces.

Everyone is welcome!

In an accessible or inclusive city, everyone can be themselves. Everyone is equally important and everyone can participate. At home, at school, at work, on the street, in sports or culture. Everywhere in the city. Even if you have a disability, you should be able to live as you want as much as possible.

Will you help?

We create an accessible city together. The municipality therefore continues to work on improvements. But ideas from the city are also important.

Our actions

The municipality of Heerlen is working in various ways to make the city more accessible. For example, we are looking at suitable housing and living arrangements for people with disabilities. This gives us a better understanding of what is needed and where opportunities lie. We are also looking at public spaces. Municipal employees are going out into the field together with experts by experience. They are looking for barriers and obstacles. We then work together to find solutions. And we are collaborating on initiatives and facilities. In this way, we are making Heerlen more accessible, step by step.

Examples:

A High Need app

Students have researched which public toilets are accessible for the municipality. Using the national app'HogeNood', you can find out where to go to the toilet when nature calls.

A place for the rainbow community

Centr@l Parq, located at Oranje Nassaustraat 23A, is home to Queer Parkstad, COC Limburg, and youth organization @ease. Central Parq is a meeting place for like-minded people. The long, narrow space is cozy, with various seating areas, tables, and a bar with a few refrigerators for food and drinks.

Disabled sports

However, it is still not easy for people with disabilities to find suitable sports and exercise facilities nearby. Through Iedereen Kan Sporten Parkstad (Everyone Can Play Sports Parkstad), we want to give disabled sports a better and more prominent place. Check out the website iedereenkansporten.

Accessible playgrounds

An accessible playground in Welten with play equipment that children with disabilities can also use. And with adapted paths, so that people who use mobility aids can move around the playground more easily. In the coming years, Heerlen wants to make all playgrounds more accessible.

An accessible swimming pool

Hoensbroek Swimming Pool has been renovated to improve accessibility, with features such as disabled toilets and larger changing rooms. Attention has also been paid to the floor finish (non-slip) and the use of colors for the different parts of the swimming pool.

Theater performances for the visually impaired

The Parkstad Limburg Theater, in collaboration with the Komt het Zien! Foundation, offers a special theater experience for people who have little or no vision at a number of performances.

More accessible buildings

Think of BMV Molenberg and Schunck, but also buildings belonging to small businesses in the city. Here, for example, we have modified the sidewalk, made steps more visible, or installed push buttons on doors. We also contribute to new construction plans. Examples include Kindcentrum Bekkerveld, BMV Heerlerbaan, Buitenschoolse Opvang Mijn Spoor, and the Paulusschool.

Adapted workplaces

The municipality encourages the adaptation of workplaces to accommodate disabilities. The Employer Service Point (WSP) actively provides information to employers. The municipality and the UWV provide job coaching for job seekers. The target is to create 150 additional workplaces. More information about this can be found on the Sprinc website .
