Safety Risk Area Extended Through December 19
Mayor Roel Wever has extended the security risk zone in Heerlerheide-Passart and Vrieheide-De Stack until December 19. He did so after consulting with the police and the Public Prosecutor's Office.
The measure is intended to prevent disturbances and unrest. The municipality also wants to remove weapons from the streets.
In this area, the police are authorized to conduct preventive searches. This means that the police may stop and search you even if you haven’t done anything wrong. The Public Prosecutor’s Office has authorized this.
What is the municipality doing to address public nuisance?
The municipality is working together with the police and the Public Prosecutor's Office. Over the past few weeks, they have taken several actions:
- The police and law enforcement officers are often in the neighborhood
- The police have arrested several people
- They have installed additional cameras
- During searches, the police found weapons, such as knives and a screwdriver
Why is the mayor extending the measure?
During the summer vacation, local residents were very concerned. They were bothered by young people and felt unsafe. They asked Mayor Wever for help. Since then, the mayor has been taking additional measures. He is working closely with the police on this.
"The security risk zone remains necessary. During checks, we find knives. A first responder was also assaulted. Some members of the youth group are still causing problems. People who report disturbances are being intimidated. Young people run away from the police. This leads to dangerous situations."
What are we going to do in the coming months?
- The police will continue to conduct preventive searches
- The municipality, police, and youth and safety partners are developing a plan for young people who cause disturbances
- Young people who cause disturbances will be dealt with appropriately, such as through punishment or assistance
- More youth workers are coming to the neighborhood
