Making Aarveld more sustainable: a big step forward

Heerlen is taking the next step in making the city more sustainable. In the Aarveld neighborhood, we gave the go-ahead on Friday for the renovation of 90 homes owned by housing corporation Wonen Zuid. These homes from the sixties, we will thoroughly tackle to make them more energy efficient and comfortable.

Energy conservation and home comfort

In the sustainability process, the homes will get new window frames and a thick layer of insulation on the ceilings of the storage rooms. We will also implement other energy-saving measures. Due to these renovations, some homes will go from energy label F to B. This not only means lower energy costs for the residents, but also a higher quality of living.

Casper Gelderblom , Alderman Wonen & Milieu is proud of this great result. “With the sustainability of these 90 homes, Wonen Zuid is making a significant contribution to our joint fight for energy justice in Heerlen. A number of homes will go from energy label F to B with this project, and the residents will really feel that! Both in their wallets and in the bedroom temperature. Energy efficiency is good for the household budget and the climate. This sustainability drive in Aarveld represents the core values of our Sustainability Offensive in the city: solidarity and sustainability in one.”

Working together

The residents on Terentius Street also rolled up their sleeves themselves. During a clean-up day, they emptied their basements to make room for the renovation work. "We know what it gives us, so we don't mind the inconvenience," says one resident who has lived in the neighborhood for more than 40 years.

Joint ambition

The renovation in Aarveld is in line with Heerlen's goal of making all housing association housing with energy label E, F or G more sustainable by 2028. In doing so, the city is not only contributing to a better climate, but also to lower energy costs for its residents.
