Peace Walk

On Sunday, September 21, during the International Day of Peace, Vredesplatform Heerlen organizes in cooperation with the municipality a Peace Walk in Heerlen-Centrum. At a time of polarization and social tension, we want this walk to convey a positive message, bring people together and provide space for reflection, encounter and dialogue. Everyone is welcome to join.

The Peace Walk in Heerlen came about because of an appeal by the mayor of Waalwijk, Sacha Ausems. She called on her fellow mayors to also organize a Peace Walk.

Mayor Roel Wever:
"In Heerlen we are happy to respond to this great initiative. The world is experiencing great unrest, tension and polarization. In these times, the Peace Walk can serve as a positive symbol of connectedness, peace and solidarity. I therefore invite everyone to walk with us and together express our desire for peace and tolerance in the world."

Program

The Peace Walk begins at 2 p.m. at the cemetery on Akerstraat. The walk then continues to the Aambos forest and ends around 3:30 p.m. at Pancratius Square. The walk is about 1.5 kilometers long and follows well-worn paths. So the walk is easily accessible for many people.

During the walk we will make several stops. Nico Zijlstra (Lodewijk Foijer Foundation and former history teacher) tells the backstory of various peace monuments in the city, Elin Rasenberg (PANDA Collective Foundation) and Nina Wijzenbeek (4-5 May Committee) recite poems, and Mayor Wever and Harrie Winteraeken (Heerlen Peace Platform) give a nice speech.
