Volunteering

Do you enjoy helping others and have some free time? But are you unemployed and receiving benefits? You may be able to do volunteer work while retaining your benefits. Ask your local government about the options available to you.

Approach

First, check with the municipality to see if you can do volunteer work while retaining your benefits. We will then work with you to determine what you need in terms of social contacts, structure, or work experience. Together with Buurtteams , we will then look for a suitable solution for you. And after you have built up social contacts and experience, the municipality may be able to help you find work.

Description

Volunteering is work for which you are not paid. If you have time to spare and enjoy helping others, you can do volunteer work. Are you long-term unemployed? Then you can even do this while retaining your benefits. The municipality supports and encourages this work. Because it gives you more social contacts, structure, and work experience, it reduces the distance to a job.

The municipality works with the Buurtteams to find suitable volunteer work for you. If you would like to know what is currently available, please visit the Heerlenonline website.

Insurance for volunteers and informal caregivers

Volunteering is important, but it also involves risks. If you cause damage while working as a volunteer or informal caregiver, or if an accident occurs, you are automatically insured through the municipality. You do not need to register for insurance.

If something has happened, first try to claim the damage from your own insurance company or from the insurance company of the organization where you do volunteer work. Is there no other insurance that will cover the damage? Then contact the municipality to report the damage.
