Setting fires outdoors

Do you want to light fires outdoors? Then ask permission from the municipality.

Approach

This is how you apply for a waiver or permit:

  • Go to the Environment Counter.
  • Do the permit check.
  • You will see if you need a permit or waiver. You can apply for the permit or waiver right away.
  • Log in. You enter:
    • why you want to start a fire
    • where you want to start a fire
    • when and at what time to light the fire
    • how big the fire will be
    • Whether there is risk of damage from the fire and, if so, what kind of damage
Cost

Rate 2024

You pay a minimum of €19.60 for processing the application and per 15 minutes of processing time. See also the dues regulation 2024 .

Description

You may not light fires outdoors. This is to protect plants and wildlife.

There are some exceptions for which you do not need an exemption. Are you not causing a nuisance? And does the fire pose no danger to the surrounding area? Then you are allowed without an exemption:

  • candles and torches burning
  • stoking fires in patio fireplaces and fire pits
  • Barbecuing (as long as there is no barbecue ban)

As an individual, do you still want to light fires outdoors? Then apply for an exemption from the municipality. This regulation does not apply to companies.

Term

The municipality will decide on your application within 8 weeks. Is this not possible? Then the municipality may extend this period 1 time.

Objection and appeal

Do you disagree with the municipality's decision? Then you can file an objection. By doing so, you let it be known why you disagree with the decision. Other people affected may also object. Objection must be made within 6 weeks.

Did you or someone else object to the municipality's decision? Then the municipality will make a new decision. Do you disagree with that decision? Then you can ask the court whether the municipality has made a good decision. This is called 'appeal'. Do this within 6 weeks. You can only appeal if you have lodged an objection.
